Randolph Lozoya: It is very confusing in America, as an undergraduate degree in psychology means nothing. To be a psychologist in America you need to complete an undergraduate degree in any subject, although it is helpful if you take some psychology classes. Then you apply to graduate school separately to become a psychologist.
Ricky Frazer: In order to become a licensed psychologist in the United States you must graduate from medical school. That means earning a bachelor of science degree (preferably in psychology), then applying and attending medical school, then completing a residency. The whole process will take about 9-12 years. However, psychiatrists are only required to have their masters degrees which can be obtained in a shorter amount of time (roughly 6 years).
Hyo Hardell: Well I'm going to be a junior (in high school) next fall and I've researched colleges a LOT. That being said I can't really explain the ENTIRE college process-I'd take up a lot of! space and STILL leave some stuff out :). I would take to her school's guidance counselor and also try spark notes.com. They have really helpful information. I'd also try theU.com if she wants to know about the college experience. Oh and a major is your main area of expertise and a minor is an area you have knowledge in(to put it VERY simply)...she can also double major if she wishes. Some good schools for Psychology are Syracuse, Tufts, UC San Diego, and Yale to name a few. Good luck to you and your daughter. I plan on majoring in Psychology when I get to college to (with a minor in English). Oh and it varies by state how long it takes to get a practicing liscence.Good luck....Show more
