How do I get a legitimate Small Business Grant?

Dick Baumgarten: Some people believe..."There is NO SUCH THING AS A GRANT TO START A BUSINESS" but this could not be further from the truth. I have been researching this topic for quite some time now and can say with absolute certainty that several businesses are started each year with small business grants. Most people think small business grants and immediately think of government grants, but the small business grants I'm referring to do not come from the government. In fact the federal government does not give small business grants, except for two programs: Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR) and Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR).Because they are so scarce and usually limited to specific geographic locations, most people assume that small business grants do not exist. Some nonprofit organizations, as well as some private corporation have small business grant programs or business competitions. In my ebook, Small Business Micro-Grants: Fund! ing Start-Ups Unconventionally, I provide some information on where to find funders of small business grants. You can download this ebook from Amazon.com...Show more

David Boehler: Not looking to buy new equipment. I know where I can get a good, used 1-ton dump truck for $1,500 and I will be looking for a used chipper. Just need money to get used equipment. I guess for now, I'll just have to trailer it.

Jesse Japak: I know when my dad was the Fire Chief, he would apply for grants and get them, but I know my job is different. I am really not asking for free money just so I can get stuff, if I have to pay it back, so be it. I will be doing tree removal, but I can't get a business loan without proving I have jobs coming in, and I can't get jobs coming in without equipment, and I can't get equipment with jobs. A vicious cycle.

Clemmie Burkleo: Consider yourself lucky that you were smart enough not to send any money -- I just hope you didn't give them pers! onal info like your social security number. There is NO SUCH TH! ING AS A GRANT TO START A BUSINESS.Think of it this way; if the government gave people free money to start businesses, wouldn't everyone who is out of work, or underemployed just "start" a business and wait for the check in the mail? Use your common sense. You know it doesn't seem realistic, and if you continue to pursue it you will eventually fall for a scam.I'm sure someone will come along and post some links to a website claiming to have grants, but I challenge you to ask them if they PERSONALLY have received a grant using the website. Of course the answer will be no.EDIT:Apples and oranges, as you admitted yourself. Trust me, if you could get a grant to start a business, everyone would do it (including myself). You will just have to take any job you can get for now and buy used equipment to get started....Show more
