Dannie Briseno: "It... cannot be reduced to a desire to understand natural phenomenon..."Not natural phenomena. That is true, but mathematicians study systems of rules and axioms using techniques that are like the techniques of science in many ways. Mathematicians use all of the same techniques of inference that scientists use, and they deal in facts that are just as non-negotiable as the facts observed by experimental scientists. This is very unlike most of the so-called "humanities" where opinions and doctrines may rise and fall like hem lines in Paris. Also, there is considerable cross-polination between math and science. Many of the systems of mathematical thought that are studied by mathematicians were invented by scientists for practical reasons. Other systems---invented by mathematicians as exercises in pure thought---turn out to have practical applications in the sciences.IMO, math and science have far more in common with one another than, say, math and Englis! h literature or math and history, etc....Show more
